What does AhluSunnah wal Jamaa’ah say about Yazeed bn Muaawiyyah?
Question Number: 1955
Peace be upon you and Allah’s mercy and blessings .. valued scholars: What is the ruling on Yazeed bn Muaawiyah in Islam?
What does AhluSunnah say about him?
Is the words of the Shites true about him?
Questioner: Abi Rabah Al-Gazzi
And peace, mercy and blessings of God .. My questioner brother:
Firstly: it is advisable to make some points before proceeding to answer:
1 – know that Yazeed is not a companion, Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah – may Allah have mercy on him – he said: “he was not born until during the Khilaafah of Uthman… He was neither a Sahaabi nor among the righteous friends of Allah.”
[Majmoo Fataawa 4/483] .
2 – know that it is not all what the people of misguidance say that is necessarily wrong, the people of misguidance sometimes do say things that are correct.. And our aim here is to explain the error of some of the common people: such that if they get to know that the Shiites like Hussein, may Allah be pleased with him, they try to avoid Hussein, may Allah be pleased with him, with the aim of contradicting the Shiites! And if they get to know that the Shiites hate Yazeed, they tend to his love with the aim of contradicting the Shiites!
Secondly: Explaining the issue of Yazeed bn Muaawiyah: know my brother, the questioner: That the people of Sunnah are upon three different views regarding Yazeed bn Muaawiyyah:
1 – Love: This is the view of some scholars such as Imam al-Ghazali, may Allah’s mercy be upon him.
2 – Aversion: This is the view of some scholars such as Imam Ibn al-Jawzee may Allah have mercy upon him.
3 –Moderate path: This is the view of some scholars such as Imam Ahmad Allah’s mercy be upon him.
Saalih bin Ahmad said: I said to my father: some people say they love Yazeed, he said: O my son, Will anyone who believes in Allah and the Last Day ever love Yazeed? I said: O my father, why do you not curse him? He said: O my son, and when have you ever seen your father curse anybody.
[Majmoo Fataawa 4/483].
This issue is an issue of Ijtihaad, there is no blame on those who go wrong in it, that is why Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah may Allah have mercy on him said after giving consideration to the words of Imam Ahmad: “Ijtihad is permissible in these two views.”
I personally tend to hate Yazeed for all what he has done of actions, as for cursing him, I do not do it for two reasons:
1 – What was reported about curses ahadith and aathar.
2 – To prevent the evils that might result from persistent cursing of somebody whose father is known as the “friend of the believers” Muaawiyah bn Abi Sufyaan- may Allah bless them both.
If you want more details on the statements of AhluSunnah wal Jamaa’ah and their attitude towards Yazeed check the book: “Yazeed bn Muaawiyah wa hukaam asrina” by our Sheikh Haani al-Sibaai, may Allah protect him, it is good and beneficial and Allah knows best.
