Hadith of the Black Flags: What is it’s authenticity?
And what is the Shariah stance regarding it?
Question Number: 3973
Question: peace, mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. Oh honourable scholars of the esteemed Shariah Committee, there are a lot of ahadith about ((black flags)) and dialogues have been held on this, what is the authenticity of this hadith and what is the Shariah opinion in this regard, and May Allah reward you all the best and protect you from all evil. Oh Allah we ask you by your mighty name that you hasten the release of our Sheikh Abu Muhammad al-Maqdisi and protect him from all evil.
Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah, and upon his family and companions and allies, but after:
The Hadeeth (black flags) has several different chains of narrations and wordings and “Kitaabul Fitan” by Imam Naeem bn Hammad is full of it, perhaps the strongest contained therein as Marfoo’ – and it is not strong enough – is the hadith of Thawbaan may Allah be pleased with him as Marfoo’ (three would be killed at your treasure all three are sons a Khaleef…,then black flags will appear from the direction of the East, they would massacre you a manner no nation has been massacred, then he mentioned something that I do not remember, then he said: If you see it, give it your bay’ah (oath of allegiance) even if you have to crawl on the snow, it is the Khaleefah of Allah al-Mahdee – In another narration – if you see black flags coming from the direction of Khorasan, approach it even if you have to crawl on….. etc.), this narration has been declared weak by Shaykh al-Albani as it is in Ad-Daeefah (1/195), and therefore the most correct in our own view is that not a single narration about “the black flags” is authentically reported from the Prophet, peace be upon him, and Allah knows best.
