AN INTRODUCTION TO BID’AH (PART 1)
bismillahi rahmaani raheem.
What is Bid’ah?
Bid’ah is an Arabic word which means “innovation”.
In the Islamic sciences, Anything that is added, taken away, distorted, misinterpreted in the Shareeah is Bid’ah
Let us see some ahaadith on bid’ah:
The messenger of Allah, Muhammad (saw) said:
And beware of newly invented matters, for every newly invented thing is an innovation, and every innovation is a misguidance [Reported Abu Daawood, and Tirmidthee who said, Hasan Saheeh]
On the authority of Abu Najih Al-Erbadh bin Sariah, who said,
The Messenger of Allah, (saw), gave us a sermon by which our hearts were filled with fear and tears came to our eyes. We said: O Messenger of Allah, it is as though this is a farewell sermon, so counsel us. He said: I counsel you to fear Allah and to give absolute obedience even if a slave becomes your leader. Verily he among you who lives [long] will see great controversy, so you must keep to my Sunnah and to the Sunnah of the rightly-guided Rashidite Caliphs cling to them stubbornly. Beware of newly invented matters, for every invented matter is an innovation and every innovation is a going astray, and every going astray is in Hell-fire.
[Recorded in the forty Hadeeth of Imam Nawawi, Related by Abu Dawud and Al-Tirmithi, who said that it was a fine and true Hadith.]
‘Abdullah narrated that the Prophet (saw) said,
I am your predecessor at the Lake-Fount (Kauthar) and some men amongst you will be brought to me, and when I will try to hand them some water, they will be pulled away from me by force whereupon I will say, ‘O Lord, my companions!’ Then the Almighty will say, ‘You do not know what they did after you left, they introduced new things into the religion after you.’
[Reported in Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 88, Number 173]
Sahl bin Sa’d said, I heard the Prophet (saw) saying,
I am your predecessor at the Lake-Fount (Kauthar), and whoever will come to it, will drink from it, and whoever will drink from it, will never become thirsty after that. There will come to me some people whom I know and they know me, and then a barrier will be set up between me and them. Abu Sa’id Al-Khudri added that the Prophet further said: I will say those people are from me. It will be said, ‘You do not know what changes and new things they did after you.’ Then I will say, ‘Far removed (from mercy), far removed (from mercy), those who changed (the religion) after me!
[Reported in Bukhari, Volume 9, Book 88, Number 174]
If this is understood, we can easily derive that since all our acts of worship are copied piece by piece from the prophet, you must not add or delete anything from it. For example the Salah has been perfectly regulated you can not do anything as part of the Salah except you have evidence that the prophet did it. The same thing applies to making Dua’a, slaughtering animal, paying Zakah, doing Hajj, greeting fellow muslims and all acts of worship, you must copy the prophet like a copy cat, Yes!
You are not allowed to do anything except you have evidence for it from the prophet or his companions.
Amongst the methods of blocking Bid’ah, Imam Bukhari stated,
Block the door of any innovation, by constantly speaking about Bid’ah and warn the people against it.
This advice is one of the unique characteristics of Ahl us-Sunnah wal-Jamaa’ah. They will expose all forms of Bid’ah, whether it is:
· The innovated idea of rejecting hadeeth Ahad in Aqeedah.
· The munkar (evil) of remaining silent about the evil innovations in society,
· The innovation of making collective dua after salah,
· The innovation of making congregational zikr,
· The Biddah of reciting Qur’aan over the dead body (thinking that it will aid the deceased),
· The Biddah of burying people in coffins,
· The Biddah of seeking help from the dead etc
. The bid’ah of abandoning Jihad and creating excuses for that.
. The innovation of saying Jumu’ah Mubaarak
. The innovation of justifying the sin of wearing garments and trousers beyond the ankles
. The innovation of reciting Al-Maathuurat
. The innovation of starting a second Jama’ah (congregational prayer) after the standard one in a standard mosque.
. The innovation of making two Adhaans for the Jumuah (friday) prayer.
May Allah save us from this and many more of the bid’ah which the people have introduced into the religion.
It is said:
“who among you can boast of having done 1/10000 of what is in Islam yet, you have the guts to introduce or practice a bid’ah???
Reflect upon that!
